5 Reasons You Should Hire A Copywriter (And 2 Reasons You Shouldn't)
Copywriters. We're kind of like Google Plus. You’ve heard of us, you’ve heard we can be useful. But you’re not quite sure what it is we do.
Copywriters write copy, funnily enough. And good copy is one of the most important things you can invest in for your business. It’s how you convey your message and your brand, and how you communicate with your customers. If the words that make up your content is bad, then no one will want to read it, and no one will know about your wonderful products.
Are you still not sure hiring a copywriter is for you? Well here are 5 reasons you might want to start considering it:
1. You Don’t Have Time
Writing good quality copy takes time. More time than you have to spare when you're running a business. If you try to spread yourself too thin doing everything yourself, then it’s all going to suffer.
If you try to write your own copy one of two things is going to happen:
You’ll write it quickly and unprofessionally because you don’t have time to focus properly on it, and it will end up not being good quality, or
You’ll realise how much of a task it is and keep putting it off until it’s looming so large over your head that the stress is driving you bonkers.
Copywriters are your time-savers. Not only will they take the job from you, leaving you the time to do everything else you have to do, and saving you from the stress of looming deadlines. But they’ll also do it quicker than you would have been able to do it yourself. Copywriters are trained and practiced in writing. They’ve perfected how to do it quickly without compromising on quality, so you get the best of everything.
2. You Haven’t Got The Knack For Grammar
Not everyone is a grammar-whizz with a command of every little nuance of the English language, and that’s fine. But if you’re not sure whether to use ‘it’s’ or ‘its’, or the difference between a hyphen and a dash, then do not try to write your own copy. If your content is dotted with grammatical or spelling mistakes it will look unprofessional and will reflect badly on your business.
As I said before, copywriters are practiced in the craft of writing. They know grammar and will be able to save you the embarrassment of using ‘their’ instead of ‘they’re’. There’s no point in risking the reputation of your business when hiring a copywriter will solve your problem.
3. You’re Too Close To Your Industry
You love your business. You know everything about it and you want to make sure your customers know as well. But sometimes your customer doesn’t want to know every single tiny detail about your business or product. They just want to know what you can do for them in exchange for their money.
A copywriter has the ability to step away from your business and look at it from the perspective of your customer, which is something you might struggle to do. They can be much more objective with the information they share, and the way they share it.
You might be used to using your industry jargon, but not all of your customers or prospects are going to understand it. A copywriter can write in your customer’s words, in a way that will resonate with them, while still getting your message across.

4. You Don’t Know Google Very Well
Google can be your business’s best friend or worst enemy. If you’re on Google’s good side you can reap the benefits of new leads, repeat customers and so much more. But if Google doesn’t know you, then no one will.
Copywriters know how to get on Google’s good side. Search engine optimisation is as much a part of copywriting as the writing itself. They know how to research the kinds of terms your customers are searching, and how to get those terms into your content in a way that makes sense and doesn’t jar the reader. They also keep up to date with any changes Google brings in so that your copy is as good as it needs to be to keep up with your competitors (and even beat them).
Think of a copywriter as a search engine whisperer, able to tame search engines into trusting your content. And when you can keep search engines happy your business thrives online.
5. You Can’t Make Your Ideas Exciting
You know the information you want to get across to your customers, but when you try to write it in blog form, or as an ebook, it just seems flat and boring. The information is all there, but it’s just a bunch of facts on a piece of paper.
Copywriters are wordsmiths. They have a passion for words and language, and can manipulate them to make even the most boring of topics interesting. Words are pretty magical when used properly. A good copywriter can inform and persuade all in the one sentence, and why wouldn’t you want that for your content?
I hope I’ve managed to convince you that a copywriter is the one thing your business is missing, and that you’re ready to look into hiring one.
But wait, don’t start Googling just yet. There are a couple of things you need to make sure of before you hire anyone, otherwise the copywriter/client relationship will never work.
Do You Have The Budget?
Copywriting can be expensive. But you get what you pay for. Good quality copy has the power to generate new and repeat customers, and can easily make you back the money you spend, and then some
But, if you don’t have the money to pay right now, then it might be best to wait. Hiring a cheap copywriter means you will get cheap copy, and that’s as bad for your business as terrible grammar.
If you do hire a good copywriter, but then realise you can’t afford to pay the agreed price, trying to get out of paying is the worst thing you can do. Copywriters talk and you will make a name for yourself as a difficult client.
You're better off to wait until you know you can afford it, and then get the best copywriter you can. You won’t regret it.
Do You Know What You Want To Say?
One of the first things a copywriter will want to find out is what message you want to get across from your copy. Why do you want this blog post or ebook written? To convert leads to prospects? To inform people of a new product?
Make sure you have goals in mind for your content. If you know you want to achieve a certain amount of new leads, and that an ebook on a certain topic will be able to do that, then make sure the copywriter knows that goal. They can tailor their writing to suit each goal.
Make sure that you know exactly what you want from the content you’re getting them to write. If you don’t know, then the copywriter definitely isn’t going to know, and they can’t write good copy if there’s no message.
Hiring a good copywriter is an investment for your business
One that has the possibility to give so much back. Great copy can make your business stand out. It can help your business communicate better with your customers, and persuade them that your product is the best.
